Our group works on a variety of physically motivated problems using a combination of tabletop
experiments, numerical simulations, and reduced-order models. We are primarily interested in
biologically and industrially inspired problems involving soft materials (including active
complex fluids and thin elastic solids). Our recent publications can be found here, but we are always developing new research directions and
are open to new projects. If you are interested in collaborating with us or joining the
group, please send me an email at tgjchandler@unc.edu
Postdoctoral Researchers
I plan to advertise a postdoctoral research position soon. The advertisement will be posted here
and distributed through several popular academic mailing lists. In the meantime, if you are
interested in joining my group, please send me an email including your CV, a brief description
of your research experience, and your research interests.
Graduate Students
Graduate students interested in rotating with or joining the group should send me an email
describing their background and research interests. Current UNC graduate students are also
welcome to stop by the lab at any time, or I would be happy to arrange a meeting to discuss
potential research projects. I am always interested in developing new collaborations and would happily
consider co-supervising students. Information for prospective graduate students in mathematics
at UNC can be found on the department's
prospective student page.
Undergraduate Students
If you are an undergraduate student at UNC interested in gaining research experience, we have
a number of exciting projects available. Our research spans a wide range of areas, from 3D
printing and hands-on experiments in our lab to mathematical modelling using numerical
simulations, differential equations, complex analysis, and other applied mathematical
techniques. No prior research experience is required, and we welcome students from any major. If
you are interested in joining the group, please send me a brief email at tgjchandler@unc.edu describing your background, your
research interests, and what you hope to gain from the experience. Additional information
about undergraduate research opportunities in mathematics at UNC can be found on the Department
of Mathematics' undergraduate research
opportunities page.
